Abilene Climbers Roadtrip Recap

15 10 2009

Eric, who maintains the blog Abilene Climbers and who is responsible for a lot of work and development at Lake Brownwood, posted a weekend recap of his recent trip to Camp Eagle and some of the taller limestone routes in Texas.  Check out his post for pics and more.

Still no word on P.O.B.

Cub Cave Update

15 07 2009

I’ve been checking the ClimbSanAntonio webpage often to see if there have been any updates regarding Cub Cave, which has seen some new work thanks to ClimbSA and American Safe Climbing. Lo and behold after logging into an Austin climbing groups page, Joe Sulak had posted something this very morning. I’ve included a portion of it here:

“Currently, with the help of Ralph, Rupesh and Jesse (last weekend, thanks for your help guys!), we now have a total of 6 routes in the cave ranging from .12a to .13+.

I started Climb San Antonio with a few friends, a non-profit, to help with access as well as be a resource for San Antonio climbers. Being a new father I’ve found less and less time to devote to the project. That said, I’ve seen the need and am planning on updating the site with the most current info on climbing areas around SA. I will also soon post a guide for Cub Cave so look for that if you’re interested.

Thanks Gary for your help as well as the ASCA and Greg Barnes for the hardware.”

Good news all around.

San Antonio’s Cub Cave

27 03 2009

The Climb San Antonio Co-op and the American Safe Climbing Association have been working together to upgrade the bolts and anchors at Cub Cave in San Antonio.  Its good to see some work being done there after years of neglect by all but a dedicated few.

Check out the beta at the Cub Cave Beta page and then watch a video of Joe Sulak on Fisher King 5.13a

The Burn, Mileski, and the early days of North Texas Climbing

13 03 2009

So I was perusing the web the other day, when I stumbled across this piece from the mostly-defunct toprope.com about Cleburne and a certain Jack Mileski .  I had heard about Jack from various folks and have seen him mentioned in everything from online climbing sites to newspaper articles, but had never the privilege of meeting him, and was hoping to learn more.

What follows is a great bit about Jack and the early days of The Burn.

Screw work. Go climbing.

2 03 2009

Just got back from a long weekend down at Camp Eagle, where the limestone is tall and the weather was perfect.  Ran into a bunch of leaders from UT-Austin’s Outdoor Rec program scouting the location for some future climbing trips, in addition to all the other great outdoor activities to be had out there – mountain biking, kayaking, etc.

The long and short of it is that I’m not quite ready to go back to work.  I’d much rather be there still.

Check out the Topo page to download the Camp Eagle guide with more pics to see what I’m talking about.

Sunday Video Roundup

17 08 2008

This video is a year old entry into a mountaingear.com contest. The editing isn’t half bad, and I’d be interested in seeing more climbing related footage from these folks.

I don’t know what they were trying to win, but judging from the quality of the footage, editing, and nature of the education of these college students, I’d venture to say that they can probably afford whatever it was. Go forth young engineers! Go forth from your expensive education and edit more fancy videos on your apple computers for the viewing pleasure of the internet realm!
